Fly Tipping North Wales

Case Study

Fly Tipping North Wales

A remote area of an existing Anchor client’s extensive 82 hectare site was suffering with regular occurrences of fly tipping. The lack of power and network to the peripheral areas of the site had left the area vulnerable to this type of incident. The client believed the reoccurring issue was being caused by the same person but struggled to gather any proof or catch the culprits in the act which would have facilitated further action.

In the early stages of the deployment of this technology solution, Anchor were able to capture the person responsible on our CCTV systems with the Anchor Operations Centre team able to gather enough evidence to support a police prosecution.    The person responsible was taken to court following the incident which resulted in a conviction and their vehicle being confiscated.

The solution remains in place as an ongoing deterrent to future issues.

The Problem

Fly tipping was a regular occurrence with several instances a month.  The client was facing the expense of the clean up job to remove the waste and ensure it was disposed of correctly and ethically.

Due to the scale and layout of the 200+ acre site there were limited options for physical security measures such as perimeter fencing that would prevent the issue from re-occurring.

As the issue was becoming more frequent, the client initially explored the deployment of additional guarding but ultimately the costs of this deployment were too high.  Anchor therefore recommended a technology based solution.

Consistent fly tipping issues with mixed waste being left on site
Costs being incurred as a result of funding clean up and recycling operations
Detrimental environmental impact and biodiversity risks
Client reputational damage as a result of poor site presentation

The Solution

Due to the area of the site facing issues being on the outer peripheries of the site, it was not possible to get power to the area, Anchor therefore deployed a solution consisting of 2 x battery operated cameras with 4G data connections back to the Anchor Operations Centre to allow us to monitor for any issues.

The battery CCTV solution uses PIR sensors to send a live alert and footage in the event that an activation occurs when motion is detected.   This approach extends the life of the batteries and has seen up to 12 months  of power achieved from a single battery.

In the event of an alarm activation, the AOC team review CCTV images and where required deploy a member of our mobile response team to address any issues.

Since the deployment of this technology, it has successfully deterred the ongoing issue and the client is reassured that should the issues re-occur then the images captured by the CCTV will enable them to find and prosecute the offender.

This solution has solved the problem at a fraction of the cost of either deploying manned security or through the extension of coverage of the existing onsite CCTV systems.
