Case Study

4M Manchester Airport Access Control Upgrade

When our client took over the multi-tenanted 4M building at Manchester Airport the existing access control system was outdated and still managed by Manchester Airport Group. In order to enhance the security of the building and ensure the client had full control of access and egress to the building, there was a requirement to remove all doors and access points from the airport’s security system and establish an independent access control system for the building’s tenants.

Anchor’s solution allowed the building to remain operational throughout the upgrade works whilst successfully establishing an independent access control network separately from the airport’s legacy access control system.

During the install both systems operated in tandem to allow those with legacy access rights to continue with uninterrupted access to the building until the new system was installed.

As a result of the install, the client has regained full control of the access to their building, including having the ability to control who is authorised to access the building, and when access is permitted.

The Problem

The existing access control network was hosted on the airport’s main security network, so a new independent network needed to be established to maintain the security of both locations.

Due to the separation with the Airport’s main security system, the new tenants in the building couldn’t access the old access control system. During the transition, some members of airport staff still required access to the building so there would be a requirement for both systems to remain operational during the upgrade works.

The car park access control system which was operated by a fob and intercom system also required a full upgrade.

Building Access Control – Throughout the works, the building needed to remain secure and operational to comply with airport security regulations. This included remaining fully operational during the changeover to the new system.
Building Network – A new secure network needed to be established and installed to allow the system to operate independently from the legacy airport system.
Building Operation – During the fit out works, the building remained operational with access required by both the new tenants and some airport staff who retained access rights during the transition.

The Solution

A new access control network was established to separate the building from the wider airport operation.   New access control readers were installed, allowing only newly issued fobs to grant entry, thereby preventing any legacy issued fobs from gaining access.
